Why Ayurveda Is Sacred Medicine

I have always asked myself why is Ayurveda sacred medicine. Here’s what I’ve found.

In Ayurveda medicine, one size prescription does not fit all.  This means that Ayurvedic treatments are tailored to each person’s unique constitution or prakriti.

In other words, the type of Ayurveda Medicine you receive will depend on your Dosha or energetic imbalance. The three types of Doshas are Pitta, Vata and Kapha Dosha. Doshas are energetic principles that exhibit imbalance in the body (dis-ease), and are influenced by factors such as stress, diet, weather and relationships.

Ayurveda Is Sacred Medicine: Ayurveda Therapies

Ayurveda does not look at the disease. Ayurveda considers the client’s vulnerability and addresses these weaknesses with diet, lifestyle, herbs and body therapies. These therapies allow emotional wounds to heal and new experiences to occur which results in strength, happiness and personal growth.

Ayurveda therapies include the following:

  • Herbal Remedies including oil remedies
  • Yoga
  • Massage
  • Meditation
  • Pranayam
  • Detoxification
  • Spiritual therapies called Daivya Chikitsa
  • Internal Medicine (Kaya-Chikitsa)

So why is Ayurveda medicine considered so Sacred?

Ayurveda is the oldest holistic healing process still around today.

Ayurveda medicine utilizes whole plants and minerals that are derived from Mother Earth. The body knows how to process whole medicines and does not know how to process isolated chemicals, which are foreign to the body.

When these whole medicines are taken with gratitude, from a trusted practitioner, with faith in the healing process and with the necessary responsibility, healing occurs.

Additionally, Ayurveda philosophy explains the marvel of one’s creation, how the elements manifest in the cosmos and give way to unique manifestations of life.

Ayurveda gives reverence to the 5 great elements of nature – earth, air, fire, water and space. These elements within us form health when in balance, and represent as the 3 Doshas of Pitta, Vata and Kapha, when out of balance.

Such knowledge and wisdom of the cosmos brings profound healing when practiced properly and received with grace. Ayurveda is sacred medicine.
