Parasites: An Ayurvedic Perspective

I have to say, since moving to Northern NSW a few years ago, I have seen more people in clinic with complications due to intestinal parasites than I saw in 15 years of practice in South Australia!

From a western perspective there are two main categories of intestinal parasites – helminths and protozoa. Helmiths are the worm shaped ones with many cells (pinworms, round worms and tape worms etc – in their adult form they cannot reproduce in the human body), while Protozoa are the single celled nasties (Giardia, Cryptosporidium and Blastocystis hominis – these can reproduce in humans and cause quite serious infestations).

In Ayurveda parasites are called ‘Krimi’ and are classified into three types-

  • Kaphaj- relate to mucous and live in the stomach
  • Purishaj- related to feces and exist mainly in the large intestine
  • Raktaj- which circulate in the blood

The classification of Raktaj Krimi describes mostly microscopic organisms that are related to various skin diseases, which we won’t cover in this article. Kaphaj and Purishaj include the western classifications above and symptoms are as follows…

Symptoms of Parasites

  • Abdominal pain and diarrhea
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Increased or decreased appetite
  • Gas or bloating, dysentery (loose stools containing blood and mucus)
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Rash or itching around the rectum or vulva
  • Tiredness
  • Weight loss
  • Bed wetting in children
  • Passing worms in your stool

A person who is affected can experience any range of these symptoms, however complications happen more often and more severely in older people, children and in people who already have serious illnesses, such as AIDS.

How they Spread

Transmission varies depending on the particular parasite, but the most common way is oral-fecal, which involves consuming contaminated food or drink, contaminated soil (usually through manure used as fertilizer) or consuming under-cooked pork, beef or fish (as in the case of tape worm).

One of the most important things to realize is that parasites are far more likely to set up residence and cause a problem if the environment in our gut is appealing to them. From an Ayurvedic point of view this means that the digestive fire (Agni) should be balanced and strong and the body free of undigested food waste (Ama). A system that is polluted with Ama is the perfect breeding ground for parasites and once they are established, their presence will perpetuate this situation.

Complications

For this reason, parasites are often present along with other health complaints, which complicates the original picture making it much more difficult to treat. Often this goes undiagnosed due to the non-specific, seemingly unrelated nature of the symptoms.

Care should be taken to treat any infestation thoroughly, not only killing the parasite, but repairing any damage done to the gut and re-establishing a healthy internal environment (one with balanced Agni that is free of excess Ama). Repeated or improperly treated infestations can produce more complicated health problems as they occur, becoming chronic and difficult to treat, as in certain cases of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (in Ayurveda known as ‘Grahni’).

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of parasites is usually done through clinical case taking, is confirmed through the pulse in Ayurveda and should be followed up by a stool test at a pathology lab (although this may need to be repeated a number of times due to the life cycle of certain species).

Treatment

To avoid further spread and contamination ensure that the water you drink is properly filtered (this includes rain water as it can easily be contaminated via the feces of native animals).

Make sure your hands are washed thoroughly after visiting the toilet, before cooking or eating and that all food is washed and cooked properly.

Treatment should ideally be done for all members of a household to avoid re-infestation and include a diet that is free from red meat, cheese and yogurt, sweets, refined foods and refined flour.

Bitter foods such as bitter melon are excellent deterrents for parasites and natural vermifuges should be used in cooking such as garlic, hing (asafoetida), turmeric, ajwain, cumin and coriander.

Home Remedies

Excellent home remedies for worms include:

• 1 tbsp Crushed Pumpkin seeds on an empty stomach before breakfast

• 1 tsp Crushed Papaya seed with honey on an empty stomach before breakfast

• 1 tsp Jaggery, 1 tsp Ajwain and ½tsp Castor oil rolled into a ball and taken at bedtime once per week.

Other remedies are necessary for the treatment of more persistent infestations, as is often the case with protozoal parasites such as Giardia and in situations that are chronic or recurrent.

If you are in any doubt about your health please be sure to consult an Ayurvedic Practitioner or your local health physician.

    Hi Danielle,

You son can definitely take Vidanga. 1tsp mixed with honey on an empty stomach before breakfast should be fine (be aware that it may cause his urine to become a reddish-purplish colour so don’t panic). Given the condition is recurring however, there may be other factors that need attention so if possible its best to visit an Ayurvedic Practitioner or doctor who is local to you.

    Best wishes.

Do you recommend Vidanga to be taken for recurring parasite infections? My son takes triphala as we are trying to restore agni and eliminate ama, and we also have vidanga, but Im unsure of the dose and best way to take it. He is 15 years old.

I can completely relate to everything that Ambika says..i too have had a life long battle with my health, mainly my digestive system, over the years IBS, Colitis, Candida etc…for the best part of 25 years now I’ve tried to educate myself as best as i can in relation to herbs and nutrition to attain good health and in recent years I’ve studied and trained with Ayurveda and used the principles i’ve learnt to enhance my well being and health. Like Ambika I have always leaned towards a very healthy balanced lifestyle and diet and just couldn’t understand why i have such trouble – still – after all these years and everything i do, using cumin, coriander, ginger etc and eating lots of kitchardi …yet here i am still my doshas are imbalanced….. !! Its very frustrating !! I too follow Ayurvedic guidelines and i’ve also been battling menopausal hot flushes, headaches, cramps etc over the last 3 / 4 years which has not helped. So I went off and handed myself over to a Natropath who used Autonomic Response Testing ( kinesiology ) and it came up that everything i was doing was woking but also i have parasites and this has been blocking my health… in particular – liver fluke……….. so …i was advised that Biltricide is the ONLY way to kill liver fluke and having been recently using herbs such as neem and manjestha for which i was in fact taking for hot flushes but in combination are good for parasites too … ( as well as munching on lots of pumpkin seeds and taking citicidal washing food and everything in apple cider vinegar etc ) … so…. i couldn’t find any information on how to successfully get rid of liver fluke via Ayurveda ..i took the plunge and took the Biltricide…which made me very ill , the worse ever migraine headache, bed ridden for 3 days ! That was a month ago now and since taking this awful product i have constant daily bloating which i just can’t get rid of….and I’m still struggling to reduce my Vata … and i don’t know if in fact i am parasite free either….i have been to see an Ayurvedic practitioner but sadly came away disappointed with very little advice and nothing i didn’t already know…. ( and as i live in Ireland its very difficult to see an Ayurvedic Practioner as there are so few and they are too far away from where i live )… am i to be a slave to this Vata imbalance for the rest of my life ? As i seem to have been out of balance since birth… and how can i tell if I’m parasite free ? P.S i have also done panchkarma a few times over the last few years….. am i perhaps dealing with something else entirely and is this my life’s learning in this lifetime i wonder ….?

Hi Ambika, thanks for the comment.
Definitely your situation will be much more difficult to treat, with repeated infestations, the chronic nature of it and the subesquent khavaigunya (weakness). It sounds as if you’re doing a lot of the right things and if you’ve been symptom free for a year before this last recurrance I wouldn’t be too disheartened. You will obviously have to be very careful to prevent re-infestation (as with the veggies from the markets) and only eat cooked food. Definitely see an Ayurvedic Physician who is local and who you trust as they should be able to prescribe specific diet and herbs that will help not only treat the parasites during acute phases, but also work to heal the gut during the times you are symptom free. Triphala, Trikatu etc. are a good start, but something more targeted may be a good idea to prevent any complications or further recurrance.
    I hope this helps.
    Warm regards,
    Kester

I was getting on the computer, specifically to research the Ayurvedic approach to Giardia, when I saw the latest Everyday Ayurveda newsletter was in my inbox. Your article is the first to appear!
Thank you for the information. I have been battling with giardia, on and off, for over 15 years. I am extremely sensitive to contaminated water and I travel a lot. So I have had some major infestations that have required a great deal of cleansing. With my experience, I have researched a lot about Giardia and I am also a student of Ayurveda and have a pretty good understanding of Ayurvedic principles and lifestyle. Although I am vegan, do not eat any packaged or canned food, take Trikatu, Triphala, and Tumeric daily, drink herbal teas, exercise and meditate regularly, and have not had any major health problems, I continue to get Giardia. I mention this because I am not someone you would think would be full of Ama. Some studies suggest it is in my system, sometimes dormant, and that all I need are the correct conditions of Ama to allow for it to “wake up” and take over. Others suggest it is possible that I am eradicating it, but that I continue to ingest it since I live in areas where it is prevalent. Both seem possible. I have also heard that it can, after years of being in the gut, start to get into the blood and other organs. I was struggling with stomach issues for years until I got onto a more pure vegan diet and Ayurvedic herbs and spices daily. Finally, I felt like I had my health under control, no more colon pain, no more indigestion, and no signs of Giardia for over a year. Then this week, I get it again. I realized that I was lazy about washing vegetables from the market last week when I was away from home and super hungry. So, here I am again: pumpkin seeds, black walnut, wormwood, clove, garlic, onion, grapefruit seed extract, no fruit or sweet food. I realize that this is something that I must be given to be one of my battles in this lifetime, and I am grateful never to have had any other major illness. I have also done a lot of emotional healing and strengthening my second and third Chakras. All of this work has been beneficial and I have made great strides. Can you refer me to some more in-depth information you would suggest for someone like me? I have vision to continue to live and work abroad which makes my risks much greater. I also would like to have children and being pregnant and taking herbs to kill parasites are not in harmony with one another. Plus, years of intense anti-parasitic herbal intake is not healthy for the liver. I try to balance and restore my liver when I am not experiencing illness, but then I get it again! Anyway, this is just a snippet of my experience and problem I face. Thank you for your time. Blessings
