8 Hair Loss Diet Tips From Ayurveda
For hair loss, Ayurveda recommends therapies and diet which pacify Pitta and Vata dosha.
Increased Vata dosha can make hair look dry, frizzy and lifeless with dry scalp. Increased Pitta dosha may lead to premature greying of the hair and baldness. Increased Kapha dosha leads to itching and oily scalp.
Ayurveda advises a healthy diet that balances all three doshas, along with proper water intake and sound sleep. Pranayama and sirasasana are particularly recommended for hair fall.
1. Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera juice is known to pacify pitta and improve digestion. It also detoxifies the body and promotes hair growth. Consume 30 to 50 ml of aloe vera juice daily for a period of 3 months for best results.
Aloe Vera can be applied externally to cure dandruff because it possesses anti-fungal properties.
2. Indian Gooseberry And Citrus Fruits
Adequate intake of vitamin C is essential for iron absorption. Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin and so it is not stored in the body. Hence it is advised to take lots of vitamin C.
Indian gooseberry can be blended into a juice along with cucumber. Consume this early in the morning for good results.
Include adequate amounts of oranges, lemons, grapefruits, guava, Indian gooseberry, capsicum and leafy green vegetables in your diet.
3. Yogurt
Yogurt or buttermilk is an ideal source of probiotics and zinc. Regular intake of buttermilk or yogurt is advised at lunch time. Yogurt can also be applied to hair as a mask along with egg white and lemon juice.
4. Nuts And Dried Fruits
Anemia is one of the major causes of hair loss. Include dried fruits like dates, prunes, raisins and apricots in your diet. These are known to increase hemoglobin.
Almonds, walnuts, flax and sunflower seeds are great source of protein, vitamin E, omega fatty acids, biotin and other minerals. Include these for breakfast for better results.
5. Green Leafy Vegetables And Curry Leaves
Curry leaves have long been considered beneficial for hair growth in south Indian, Tamil folk remedies. Regular intake of curry leaves promotes hair growth and prevents premature greying of the hair.
Include lots of greens in your diet. They are best for your overall health due to good amounts fiber, vitamins, iron and calcium.
6. Fruits
Fruits are nature’s gift. They are loaded with vitamins, minerals, water and low in calories. Berries, bananas, papayas, kiwi and avocado and all other fruits are beneficial.
Have 2 to 3 seasonal fruits per day. Include them for breakfast, brunch and lunch, before meals as advised in Ayurveda.
7. Protein
Eggs, poultry, fish and oysters are particularly essential for hair nutrition due to their high amounts of protein and minerals.
