Brahmi Gritham Is An Effective Ayurvedic Medicine For ADHD In Children

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a disorder characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that is frequently displayed and more severe than that typically observed in individuals at a comparable level of development.

Since correlation of ADHD cannot be found in Ayurvedic Samhitas (the Ayurvedic texts), one should consider it in terms of doṣha prādhanya, which can be suggested as Vāta-pitta.

The aggravation of vāta is responsible for inattention and hyperactivity and the aggravation of pitta leads to impulsivity. The Ayurvedic management should be planned to reduce vāta pitta dosha using vata pitta shamaka medicines.

There was a pilot study to identify the effect of brami gritham on ADHD children.1 The brahmi itself is considered as a potent drug which increases learning skills in children. Additionally, the brahmi plant resembles the cerebellum of the human
brain and it promotes memory and intelligence.

Brahmi Gritham

According to Charaka Samhita the reference of brami gritha can be found in Chikitsa stana.

Brāhmī ghṛitam is an Ayurvedic formula that contains four medhya herbs. Medhya herbs have a positive effect on the central nervous system (CNS). They are Brāhmī (Bacopa moneri), Vaca (Acorus calamus), Kuṣṭha (Sassurea lappa) and Śankhapuṣpī (Convolvulus pluricaulis). All of these are processed in Goghṛtam, ghee prepared from cow’s milk, to make brahmi ghritam.

How To Take Brahmi Ghritam

Take a quarter to half teaspoon of Brahmi Ghritam with water, usually before food, once or twice a day. Drink hot water soon after taking Brahmi Ghritham. Avoid cold water and cold food after taking Brami Gritham.

How Brahmi Improves Brain Function In Children

The botanical name of Brahmi is Bacopa Moneri. It contains two potent chemicals called bacosides A and B. According to the research, Brahmi improves the transmission of impulses between nerve cells, especially in the brain. The neurobiological effects molecules were found to increase protein kinase activity and new protein synthesis, specifically in cells in the region of the brain associated with long-term memory. It also increases the level of serotonin, a brain chemical to give relaxation.

Because of the herb’s ability to boost brain function while reducing anxiety, it is a good choice of drug to help with ADHD. Brahmi has a unique ability to invigorate mental processes while reducing the effects of stress and anxiety, which is a perfect combination of an ADHD sufferer’s attention difficulties.
