Green smoothies are all the rage, particularly here in Byron Bay. They are promoted as one of the best things you can do for your health.
In case you are one of the rare few who has never had one, green smoothies are usually made up of about 40% leafy greens and 60% fruit. Sometimes they contain a other goodies to either make them tastier or more nutritious, such as chia or flax seeds, maca or camu powder, cacao nibs, hemp protein, spirulina or coconut oil.
At first glance, the power-packed hit of vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and fiber you get from a green smoothie seems indisputably healthy, so why on earth would you avoid them?
The Ayurvedic view is never just about NUTRIENTS, it is always about QUALITIES. These seemingly super-smoothies have some qualities that can have a negative effect if consumed regularly over an extended period of time.
Three reasons to avoid smoothies (or take in moderation)- An Ayurvedic perspective:
1. Green Smoothies Aggravate Vata Dosha
Green smoothie recipes often call for chilled water or the addition of ice cubes. On top of this, the majority of the fruits and veggies added to them are cold in quality (they have a cooling post-digestive effect). Even if you’re adding some warming ginger to your smoothie, the overall quality of smoothies is still usually COLD. Leafy greens like kale, chard, spinach and cabbage; veggies like broccoli and celery; as well as a number of fruits are also DRY and ROUGH in quality.
The Vata (Air/Ether) dosha in our bodies has the qualities of dry, rough, cold, mobile and changeable. Foods that are COLD, DRY and ROUGH, directly aggravate Vata. Like increases like. When Vata is aggravated, it causes increased dryness, roughness, coldness, mobility and variability in the body/mind.
This can be experienced as:
- Variable appetite
- Gas or pain after eating
- Dry constipation or loose motions (increased mobility)
- Dry/rough skin and hair
- Variable energy
- Poor circulation
- Pain or cracking in the joints
From a mental perspective, aggravated Vata is associated with increased:
- Mental agitation
- Restlessness
- Flightiness
- Grasping
- Anxiety
- Poor concentration
- Poor memory
- Changeable moods
- Insomnia
Vata has a strong association with the nervous, endocrine and excretory systems so excess Vata is most inclined to affect these systems. According to the principles of Ayurveda, the majority of diseases are related to aggravated Vata dosha.
2. Green Smoothies Deplete Ojas
Long-term aggravated Vata is also associated with catabolism or the breaking down of tissues. This is one of the reasons why people often feel very energetic when initially getting into green smoothies (and raw food generally) – because when a cell breaks down a huge amount of energy is released!
The good news is your fat tissue gets broken down. The bad news is your other tissues do too, including the deeper tissues of bone, marrow, nerve and sexual reproductive tissue. Depletion of these important deep tissues is never a good thing. We’re talking:
- Weaker teeth
- Weaker bones
- Compromised nerve conduction and communication
- Hormone issues
- Infertility
These deeper tissues are also directly responsible for nourishing ‘Ojas’ the foundation of our immune system. If these tissues become depleted, Ojas also becomes depleted. As a result, we become more susceptible:
- Auto-immune problems
- Chronic fatigue
- Other diseases of depletion.
3. Green Smoothies Are Difficult To Digest
Although many of the ingredients in a green smoothie are actually light, the sheer quantity of ingredients can make them very dense and therefore heavy. If you’re adding a bunch of superfoods to the mix, your smoothie is going to be even heavier. Heavy food, although satisfying to one’s hunger, are difficult to digest.
Green smoothies are very complex. Our digestive fire (‘Agni’ in Sanskrit) likes simplicity. For example, our Agni has no problem digesting a few veggies that have been cooked with mung daal, rice and spices to aid digestion. Foods cooked together in a single pot have time to get to know each other, to combine their qualities and be transformed from several individual ingredients to a single meal with a particular character. In contrast, smoothies contain a multitude of ingredients with very different qualities combined raw in a blender. Raw food prepared in this way may be delicious, but it doesn’t allow for this subtle transformation and marrying of qualities. As a result, the meal remains very complex which is difficult for the body to digest.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, green smoothies contain the number one food combination no-no. Ayurveda teaches that fresh fruit should never be combined with any other foods. As we know, green smoothies combine fresh fruit with leafy greens, veggies and sometimes superfoods. Although somewhat pre-digested thanks to the blending process, the smoothies still stay in our stomachs for as long as the most difficult food contained within them takes to digest. As a result, the fresh fruit (which is light and easy to digest in comparison to all other foods) generally stays in the stomach for too long and ferments – causing over-digested food wastes (or ‘Ama’ in Sanskrit).
In the short term, green smoothies may be cleansing, due to their high fiber content, but they tend to put a strain on the digestive fire – which most people experience as a sensation of lasting ‘fullness’ (and think this is a good thing!).
In the long run, the aggravation of Vata can lead to an imbalanced digestive fire of the ‘Variable’ kind (like a candle blowing in the wind). Variable digestion is associated with pain, bloating, flatulence, burping and also leads to the under-cooking of foods or undigested food wastes (‘Ama’). This is where the ‘cleansing’ benefit can be reversed. Undigested wastes accumulate in the digestive tract and eventually overflow and relocate into the deeper channels and tissues of the body. There they begin to wreck havoc on cellular nutrition and waste disposal and can, thus, from the Ayurvedic perspective, becoming the root of all disease.
I invite you to pause and reconsider next time you find yourself in line at the local juicery. Your agni, tissues and emotional state will thank you in the long run.
Make Your Green Smoothies Healthier
So there you have it! Some pretty good reasons to reconsider the green smoothie trend…. aggravated Vata, depleted tissues, depleted Ojas, imbalanced Agni and accumulating Ama!
Having said all that, it should be noted that if you have a robust Pitta or Pitta/Kapha constitution with a super strong digestive fire and a body in need of a little cooling, you’ll be able to handle green smoothies better than most. On the other hand, if you have a strong influence of Vata in your constitution, you should not overdo them.
If you’re already addicted to green smoothies and are determined to keep having them for whatever reason, try the following adjustments to make them slightly more Ayurvedically-friendly:
- add a pinch of turmeric and ginger and a squeeze of lemon to the mix to aid digestion
- have them at room temperature, not cold… or even add a little hot water
- keep the ingredients to a minimum, keep it simple and less dense – less is more!
- add a little coconut oil to offset the dry/rough qualities of the veggies
- try them without fruit
- avoid the addition of superfoods – they make them even heavier
- only have them a couple of times a week, not daily.
I hope this helps! Or better still, you can just make a green veggie soup instead!
PLEASE NOTE: If you are in any doubt, it is a great idea to see an Ayurvedic Practitioner for specific recommendations.
I don’t understand Ayurveda but I have read enough to know it is very helpful. I read a lot of the comments below this article & people can be very closed minded if it doesn’t fit their own narrative but years later they may be in a different place altogether. This article helped me understand what I am having trouble with. I tried raw food for a week & thought I was going to freeze to death in a hot house. I have been going back and forth between mostly Vegan raw foods & some cooked foods & I couldn’t figure out why I was hot sometimes & cold sometimes, it must be a Raw foods verses Cooked foods battle.
I seem to do well with 75% Green Smoothies that only have a small handful of frozen cherries or berries in the morning, but even that affects my body temperature for the day. If I eat all cooked foods though, I sweat all day long. How do you heal digestive problems like that? How do you heal the digestive problems you mentioned in your article? Does it take a trained Practioner to help with that? Does it take very long to heal those digestive problems?
I consumed a smoothie containing ( mostly ) green apple , frozen peach, banana and a large amount of frozen spinach. I was effected mainly negatively with a rapid heart rate, unsettled emotions and hyperactivity. I guess I just need to start smaller in my portions and maybe try a recipe that gives me a much gentler effect. Thanks for the article.
Correction. The large amount of spinach was fresh
This article is unscientific and simply wrong. As a medical doctor who suffered from Lupus for 12 years with kidney failure and blood clots, who is now Lupus free for 11 years, I have discovered that raw foods are the answer to healing autoimmune disease and chronic fatigue – as well as skin issues. I have healed people from around the world with healing green smoothies (which are 75% greens not 40%) combined with omega 3s and fruit. They are ice cold and jump-start the healing process in a way no one else has been able to replicate. NYU is in the process of doing a clinical trial on the effects of my green smoothie diet on Lupus because of the dramatic results I have been able to achieve with patients. My recommendation is that you write articles based on real results with real people, and if not, you at least preface it with “I think” rather than speak as if you know these things to be true from experience. You are putting lives in danger otherwise.
Agreed!
Horrible, incorrect, lame article that’s chock full of crap.
I have autoimmune conditions and greens have been probably the no.1 healing thing to me (after having dental metal removed, as it was causing the issues). Bananas and other fruit provide an incredible amount of energy to those with low energy and struggle with hypothyroidism. Smoothies and fruits and salads have been nothing short of a lifeline for me and my family. I thank God for the vegan folks out there making videos on the benefits of smoothies.. without them, my son and our whole family wouldn’t be where we are today, health wise, and that is an understatement.
Green drinks have worked wonders for my digestive issues – and I’m a pitta. Green drinks did for me what four doctors and thousands of dollars couldn’t do.
TCM (traditional Chinese Medicine) would back up the claims made in this article. What the three negative commenters are missing is an holistic perspective. TCM doctors commonly treat raw foodists for a panoply of imbalances mentioned in this article. What I have seen is that to many, raw food is like a religion…skimpy basis, hyped up by advertising, and blind belief.
Thanks for your factual article!
What about if you juice your greens and do not blend it?
Ive got crohns so eating too much whole fruit/veg hurts my digestive system
Hi Carrie. I have successfully reversed Crohns in only 2 weeks in a recent patient (I am an MD not ayureda). People with Crohns need the raw foods but their guts are too inflamed to process them when they are actively sick. I recommend you start with green juices for a few days until your bowel symptoms quiet down, then add green smoothies as tolerated as well as cooked veggies. You should be able to get back to eating again very soon as long as you stick with whole plant foods and a daily green smoothies to keep your immune system healthy. Let me know if you have any questions! I wish you amazing health.
The way juicer promoters on t.v. Advocate mixing 7 different types of vegetables with 6 different types of fruit is “irresponsible” to say the least!!! They also say it’s great for ones health if he or she throws in about 8 different types oh “herbs” ( ranging from oregano to sage and clove!!! ) as well! They fail to realize that not all of those things were MEANT to be mixed together and simultaneously consumed!!! Sometimes, a handful of herbs, when mixed finely together with certain fruits and vegetables, can produce often toxic “secondary” chemicals!!!! In short, it is VERY important to KNOW WHAT YOUR’E DOING before you start haphazardly mixing sh-t together!!! Hey Hey Hey, that’s just not a very wise way to DO things.
This is a great article. Someone recommended that i try green smoothies so I did. OH BOY, was that a mistake! It reeked havock on my bowels, stomach and it was a disaster. I was also on a medication that caused a similar side effect. I eliminated supplements, green smoothies and found the med was my intestinal havock reeker! So, now a month or so later i try another green smoothie and only take 2-3 sips and now I am in the same boat as last time! NO MORE so called HEALTHY green smoothies for me! Apparently my med and the smoothie were causing the same problem. This post explains very well what was happening to me when drinking smoothies. Thank you for a great read.
Hi Caroline – it might be that the smoothies are not prepared right (for a healing cocktail it should be 75% greens and 25% fruit with a handful of chia or flax seeds and water). If you make the smoothie this way and you don’t feel great, it isn’t because the smoothie is unhealthy, it’s because your gut is. If you have eaten meat, dairy or processed foods or are exposed to antibiotics, your gut won’t be able to process these healthy foods. A high grade probiotic is a good idea to help heal this along with avoiding the foods mentioned above. I hope you feel great soon.
I completely agree with this article after green juicing constantly day-in and day-out for nearly 2-3 years. I have always been a healthy person, eating a well-balanced diet since I was a child (limited processed foods and mostly whole foods eggs, fish, rice, rye breads, cooked vege, soups and some fruits, however when I was about 23 I got caught up in the green superfood juicing and went crazy on it. I never ate much processed foods and I only ate chicken and fish as meat every now and then as my body struggles to digest red meats (I get constipated). Interestingly after about 6 months green juicing I ended up with so many random body issues I had no idea that it was from the high amount of raw food/juicing that I was consuming! I had major dandruff, nail rot in both feet, I got thrush regularly and urine infections, psoriasis around my nose, very dry skin and pale, I always felt cold even though I was living in tropical Queensland and I always had to pee all the time, I had liquid faeces most days (but thought this was normal and whenever I observed what came out I always saw bits of undigested carrot, spinach etc.. I was not even absorbing any nutrients!!) and I was always flighty and had terrible anxiety in the mornings. Chinese medicine also explains these core issues regarding raw food and its affects on the digestive fire and how cold raw foods and liquids can create dampness in the spleen! This then disrupts Qi (life energy) flow to the heart which causes the anxiety and the dampness causes fungi, bacteria like the dandruff and nail rot to grow. IT WAS INSANE! IT was not until I talked to my chinese medicine friend as I was in massage that she told me to stop all the juicing and go back to cooking veggies and eating warming foods. Within a month all these symptoms turned around and my constant craving for salt diminished. Despite all the fluids and “nutrients” I was actually so dehydrated flushing out so many of the natural minerals in my body, I was damaging my body and my joints and bones had started to hurt! Now I eat a lot of chicken bone broths, warming teas and cook all my veggies and also fruit which I eat sparingly maybe once every few months. It is crazy the colour of my skin is glowing and tanned, I never get thrush or dandruff and my nail rot and urine infections have gone. In chicness they believe cooking the food rids parasites, bacteria and fungi from the food and is important in health. I detox with coffee enemas every now and then but willl NEVER go back to cold drinks or green smoothies!
Like Dr. Lad says, “Smoothies: ama in a blender” 🙂
This is great info i have shared it on my FB page.. Vegetables are full of cellulose. We are not goats. Digestion is a warm process. Cold, raw, iced foods damage that. I have had many patients whose digestive and dermatalogical conditions resolved when I got them to stop having iced beverages, raw food, and smoothies. Good work!
Here is some further and similar info why smoothies destroy Agni, especially in Vata types. This is great info. Vegetebles are full of cellulose. We are not goats. Digestion is a warm process. Here is some further and similar info why smoothies destroy Agni, especially in Vata and Kapha types. I would accept, just a little bit, the idea of smoothies in summer for pitta types, or for those with very strong agni who do hard exercsie. I

this is so true.. im a healthy eater, and recently began drinking green smoothies. Everytime I drank one I got REALLY sick. brain fog, bloating. I couldn’t even move. Pretty soon I have like some kind of major constipation and other health issues. this was surprising to me but I figured there has to be something not good about these. First off the kale, isn’t that good, but its the combination of everything as stated in this article. I just released maybe weeks of ‘fiber’ that wouldn’t leave my system..also the fiber from these things just sits in your body..it’s not good.
Okay, I’m trying to make heads or tails of all this. I have a problem that I can’t seem to resolve and know nothing of ayurvedics but am willing to learn, Greens make me constipated, I’ve never eaten them raw, but steamed, I won’t use the bathroom for up to a week, then get desperate and take a laxative. I can’t find an answer to this problem. I know I need what is in the greens but can’t access whatever good is there. I don’t have a problem with broccoli so eat great amounts, no kale, collards or book choy, green powders, etc. This article does provide a bit of light on this subject but I need to understand the terms, which I will look into now. Thanks.
Wow, I can’t believe this psuedo-scientific trash came up in a Google search.
For anyone who might stumble in here from a Google search: IGNORE the information here. It’s witchdoctor mumbo jumbo with not a single shred of scientific evidence. The “references” are the same new age junk.
Make sure you educate and inform yourself with REAL science.
Wow your a freaking ass and debbie downer. No one persons body is the same and what works for one wont always work the same way for another persons body. How can you say mumbo jumbo when you dont know what people are going through.
dipshit comment “science”
This paragraph gives clear idea in support of the new
visitors of blogging, that genuinely how to do blogging.
nice article. madam how to balnce vata are there any ayurvedic medications to be taken for balancing vata.
please guide me. i live in india
thanks
Great article. I didn’t know that raw foodists could suffer from bone or teeth issues. Green smoothies can also have a detox effect on the body if the greens are especially concentrated, powder form such as wheat grass etc. Sprouted green powders will aid digestion, so will those that contain added probiotics. Maybe protein smoothies might be far better for aggravated Vatas.
It’s going to be end of mine day, however before end I am reading this enormous piece of writing to improve my experience.
I’ve been juicing and vitamixing for over 10 years. Deff gives you a glow and feel great but I wonder if these pre-digested foods are even been exposed to our stomach acids long enough to become sterile? May lead to bacterial issues in your gut. I know the article states they may sit in our systems for longer but I feel like these blended foods pass through my body quickly at least in the stomach where food should be exposed to stomach acid. Fruits generally digest quicker but blended into baby food I think is sending it straight to intestines
Glad I found your website. I need some info on my choice of green smoothie. I have been drinking 2 pints a day for 2 weeks. 6 oz. raw kale, 6 oz. raw spinach, 1 apple, 2 bananas, 6 strawberries, 3 tbsp. chia seeds, 3 tbsp. pea protein powder, and 2 pkgs. stevia in the raw, 21/2 cups water, recipe makes 64 oz.. After the first week, My mouth started getting red and irritated looking. Could I be allergic to something in my smoothies? Am I mixing the wrong things together? I’ve not changed any other thing in my diet. The recipe is from “The Green Smoothie Diet” by Robyn Greenshaw.
I haven’t read all the comments, but what if you have a smoothie in the morning, hot well balanced meal midday and them smoothie in the evening, at room temp? Or to counter the ‘coldness’, why not have more hot drinks? Or does this shock the system – hot then cold, hot then cold etc. Sorry if this has already been answered.
“Youre running down the wrong rabbit hole – run down mine instead.”
Micro-informationalistic capitalism at its finest. Its easy to create words Western doctors have been doing it for more than century
Ok, something I don’t understand about the article: I get that ‘rough’ and ‘dry’ aggravate vata. However, when blending greens into a smoothie, water is generally added. This results in a product which is WET and SMOOTH. It is the final product that is consumed, and we know that food alters its qualities based on preperation, and what it is mixed with.
Also, regards Ojas depletion because it is so difficult to digest, I thought liquids were easier to digest than solids? And wouldn’t it be more applicable if raw greens was all you ever ate? I can’t see how one daily glass of green smoothie would deplete your ojas.
I meant if I was eating properly and to keep a food diary…..I got aerating up there, the spell check
Dear Nadia,
I am a Vata – Pitta living in Perth, WA, despite being a long term yogi and an ayurvedic student of Dr David Frawley, I was caught up in the green smoothie craze when my husband bought us a Vitamix in Feb 2010, the first month, life was a wow, then it was still summery, came that winter, I had constipation and severe heart palpitations and chilblains, so I drank extra smoothie, 1 litre a day, it wasn’t cold, the temperature, but I would shiver for 10 minutes after drinking the smoothie, I kept on with it till late Oct last year, 2013, the 1 litre breakfast smoothie…..my health declined…….
My mother in law one day asked me to keep a food diary to see if I’m aerating properly and to note down my emotions and moods etc after each meal…..after a few weeks of that, I noticed how my anxiety increased 30 minutes after each smoothie meal…an aha moment came to me, slow learner me…
But this winter, I have hot kicharee or congee every morning for breakie, what a blessed change!! I have minimal arthritis problem, chilblains and my heart is strong enough to maintain a strong yoga practise again! Vata is happy! I still do a green smoothie as I love it, but not everyday, maybe 3 times a week and not in that quantity and certainly NOT on a cold winter morning!
Love your work!
I like the valuable info you provide in your articles.
I’ll bookmark your weblog and check again here
frequently. I’m quite certain I’ll learn many new stuff right here!
Best of luck for the next!
First of all I would like to say great blog! I had a quick question which I’d like to ask if you do not mind.
I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing.
I have had a difficult time clearing my thoughts in getting my thoughts
out there. I truly do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are generally lost simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or tips?
Thank you!
Yet another example of pseudo science at its best. Don’t blend fruits and vegetables as it increases vata, deplete ojas, and is hard to digest. The every same people will tell you that clarified butter is great for health??? This is why America is in the sad state it is… We search the world over for the most ridiculous advise ever, and accept it as truth.
This, from someone who can’t even spell simple words…
Wow how can you be so rude! Each person has different effect to smoothies and what might work for one wont work for another. Tell me how you can judge what other people are feeling and their physical effects. Think before you post such rude comments that are your rude opinion.
At the very least, this article has generated a lot of shared experiences and opinions. It is also an opportunity to see various point of view, so I may as well include mine. If a prayer offered by a thankful heart, any diet will nourish.
I read this article and what the hell are they talking about. Vata, ojas. WTF. English so the average person knows what the hell your saying.
average? below average i’d say – you’re reading about an ancient Indian healing method and you don’t like Indian words? maybe watch and listen to the videos – if you’re capable
I think this is mainly applicable to a vata person.
People with vata/pita or vata/ kapha constitution can use green smoothies with appropriate ingredients.
But you really pointed out the craziness behind green food.It is not the food for everyone.
All the best
Great comment. Thanks for your positive words! So true.
I think if you really understand Ayurveda, a blanket statement like this does not work.It depends on the dosha, as well as time of year! you can also warm up smoothies with ingredients like ginger.
yep know your constitution live well
Dr. Gabriel Cousens just posted an interesting excerpt from his book Conscious Eating today, with interesting aspects and caveats to the points made in this article:
The traditional Ayurvedic teachings discourage vatas from eating a lot of raw foods, but in my clinical research I have found that many vata constitutional types such as vata, vata-kapha, and vata-pitta do quite well with live foods if they follow certain principles. Vata-pittas do particularly well with raw food because they have the additional fire of the pitta energy to give heat to the system. One approach is the use of soaked nuts and seeds, particularly in the seed sauce form. There are many raw foods that are high in oil content, such as avocado, nuts, and seeds, which I have found to be balancing for vatas. Sprouted or soaked grains can be blended with water or juices, which balances the dryness of the sprouted or soaked grains. Warming the blended grains, raw soups, and blended vegetables adds heat to compensate for the vata coolness. A warmed, blended, soaked, raw grain cereal in the morning is very soothing for vatas (please see recipe section). Warm-to-the-touch temperature, approximately 118o F, does not destroy enzymes and supplies the needed warmth for a vata. Some people have even benefited by placing their food in an oven for a minute or two to bring the food up to body temperature.

“Conscious Eating”
In an article with many mistakes….one of the biggest is the claim that juicing fruit and veggies is difficult to digest. It is certainly true that when we eat fruit and vegetables together…it causes a digestion problem and gives us gas… The fruit is stuck behind the vegetables that take longer to digest and the fruit starts to ferment. But it is NOT the case when we JUICE fruits and veggies together. The juiced combo goes right to the bloodstream and doesn’t hang out in the stomach to cause any fermenting issue. There are some false statements in this article…and it’s a shame.
Eddie — reread the article again. She didn’t say that smoothies are difficult to digest for EVERYONE, only those with a ‘vata’ consitution.
And to claim that “the juiced combo goes right to the bloodstream” is just, as you say, false, and it’s a shame.
It’s clear that everyone will have mixed experiences about raw food and Vada dosha..
But shouldn’t sharing your opinions, Listening to others experiences and learning new perspectives be the point of discussion/debate rather than responding with arrogance and sarcasm?
Great article. Finally, so many myths about raw juicing is busted. So many are looking for an easy way out. There is no easy way out when you want to create health and well-being. I too work as an Ayurvedic Lifestyle Counselor and food is my speciality. I’ve had so many clients who are totally imbalanced from the all raw/juice diet. They are vata deranged and depleted. And it takes them so much time to return to balance. Thanks for writing this.
I am commenting to make you understand what a terrific discovery my cousin’s child developed reading through your web page.
She realized plenty of issues, with the inclusion of
what it’s like to possess a marvelous giving character to get the
others easily fully understand specified very confusing subject matter.
You actually exceeded her expectations. Thanks for offering those necessary, dependable, explanatory and fun tips about this topic to Evelyn.

As a vata/pitta type that lives in NY, I change the ingredients in my smoothies in the winter months to make them more vata friendly. More almonds, coconut oil, some fruit, and more spices like ginger peach, cardamom blueberry, some rice protein, etc. and I decrease to only two or three times a week. In the summer when my pitta nature can handle it, I add greens. The first winter I tried to do green smoothies, after drinking them in the summer, I nearly became “neurotic” from extremely high vata…..lesson learned.
I’m so glad that you wrote this! People really need to understand ayurveda and the consequences of eating too many raw foods. It’s just that ‘raw’ and ‘green smoothies’ are all the rage right now, so people will have a hard time believing you… if only they knew that ayurveda has been around for thousands of years! I was actually just going to write a post for my blog on this, but what you’ve said was perfect. When I drink these sorts of raw smoothes, I feel so sick to my stomach. I’m very in tune with my body and my digestion and have been following ayurveda for years. Thank you!
I am sure that the author intends well, it is wonderful that she made a full recovery and of course many (the majority?) of us are attracted to healing professions or to yoga through past pain. However, I am curious as to the attraction of what seems like a very restrictive, controlling diet (Ayurveda) to those who in the past have had eating disorders. The desire to control in order to avoid painful feelings may be deep-rooted in many. At any rate, I would certainly prefer to carry on eating a balanced diet including many fruits and vegetables listening more to my own instincts.
Nadia,
THANKYOU so much for this insightful post! I have known for some time that green smoothes are not good for me and I even projectile vomited once immediately after one! Now everything is clear…I’m very high Vata and so these are the last thing I should be consuming! I completely believe that every human being is different and therefore there cannot be one type of ‘superfood’ that is ‘super’ for everyone.
Thanks again, really interesting article 🙂 I think I may even have to share this on my blog (www.simplelifestrategies.com) as I feel this information needs to be shared. I’ll link back to you of course.
Warm wishes,
Zoe B
Thanks Zoe xx I’d be delighted for you to share it 🙂

Dear Readers of this Article,
I am amazed and somewhat overwhelmed by how many people have read this article and liked or shared it on Facebook or Twitter. It was originally written for our Mudita Institute newsletter which is sent out to a readership who know a bit about Ayurveda and who we aim to constantly educate – particularly about qualities, the doshas, agni, ojas, and the maha gunas. We’d been receiving a lot of questions about green smoothies from our clients so I thought it might help my husband out (an Ayurvedic Practitioner) if we had a response to refer them to. Because it was written for an audience already slightly familiar with these concepts, I didn’t go into the huge amount of detail I usually would to explain them. When it was to be re-published on this amazing site, I thought the audience would be similar….
I understand that to readers who know very little or nothing about Ayurveda, this article may seem absolutely ridiculous… because the view of qualities vs nutrients is so very different… a completely different way of thinking about food. But, if it has planted even the smallest seed of curiosity for you to explore it further (if only to prove it wrong) then I think that is maybe a positive thing. I can highly recommend any books by Dr John Douillard, Dr Vasant Lad, Dr Robert Svoboda, Dr David Frawley and Sebastian Pole. If you are a total newbie and would like a very easy introduction to Ayurveda, you could check out my book, ‘Living Ayurveda: A Practical Guide to Ayurvedic Nutrition and Deeply Nourishing the Body and Mind’, available from our website at http://www.muditainstitute.com.
Because the article was written for relative newbies, I also didn’t go into the tricky nuances of Ayurveda (such as is whether agni is stronger in summer vs winter… whether pitta is accumulating or aggravating in summer.. do we all have a bit of each dosha in our constitution etc etc). I hugely appreciate all the comments from Ayurvedic Practitioners adding to the precision and accuracy of the article… it is very exciting to see so many other Ayurveda heads out there in the world 🙂
I would agree that the best possible thing to do when it comes to foods is to ‘feel into’ whether something is good or not so good for you as an individual. But when our ‘feeling into’ isn’t yet very subtle, we can still very easily go down the wrong path so seeking the assistance of a wise guide (preferably in the form of an experienced Ayurvedic Practitioner) is a great idea.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, what is good or not so good for us varies substantially based on the climate we live in, our time of life, the time of year, our general strength, our digestive strength, our constitution as well as our current state of imbalance. Having said that, most of us live in Vata-aggravating environments and carry out very Vata-aggravating activities…. so adding to the Vata-aggravation through our food is not ideal. We need to deeply care for our Vata (Air/Ether)…. to help it move in the right directions, and circulate deeply in the body. We need to treat it with respect, warmth and kindness – antidoting its cold, dry, rough, mobile, irregular qualities with warmth, a little oiliness, stillness and regularity as much as possible.
Thank you everyone for reading and sharing the article and for all of your comments.
Warm regards
Nadia xx
HERE ARE MY ADDITIONS:
-don’t add fruit, because it’s bad food combining.
-add fat like hemp seeds or avocado pit.
-get high enzyme supplement capsules and empty a few of those into your vitamix.
-a good blend is flat parsley, fresh turmeric, broccoli sprouts, fenugreek sprouts, hemp or avocado and enough water to cover.
ALthough I like the Ayurvedic vieuw very much and it doesn,t differ so much of the Chinese one, I disagree on a few points.. I don”t know people who drink/ eat green smoothies which have a lack of energy…I know sportive type’s who are raw foodist for years ..Also a very bad example of green smoothie that you showed. A simple not cold green smoothie with ginger a bit pepper and some (not much) oil can;t do any harm.
There is NO ONE who can say what is good for you even not an Ayurvedic cosultant..Only ones own intuition does..
WOW so great to see such a long thread – this was posted by an american friend on FB – so glad it came to my attention
i am a holistic chef, that produces a superfoods blend and also informs much of my work via the ayurvedic principles which are only now starting to become more mainstream! hurray!
i agree for the most part – mostly i think we need to find what is working for us at any given time – i agree all the fibrous oxalate type veggies are always best cooked with ghee for a multitude of not just ayurvedic influenced reasons – and that green smoothies if you are going to add a super foods blend are best with a fat – i use ghee and coconut oil and some ripe easy to digest fruits – not five thousand additions – i like the algaes and pollen as they are easy to digest and rich in micro nutrients and plant based proteins – and yes always at room temp not cold no way – i advise my clients to minimise cold drinks, as a rule for most people as there is so much aggravated vata out there anyways 🙂
everything is so dogmatic and yes confusing to the average person from the health and wellness communities these days – i think the biggest teaching is offering people the tools and skills to learn to listen to their bodies – and then to make self informed choices –
my sitting at my computer today all day and drinking tea hasn’t helped my vata – and tomorrow i will start again and do my best 🙂 blessings on your work – xxx
This article has a lot of valid points, but exaggerates the negative effects based on a “worst case” scenario with bad smoothie receipes. As a vata-pita with typical vata issues, living in a rather cold climate, I have personally tried ayurvedic diets and medicine including a professional ayurvedic doctor’s advice for years, but the overall effect was very limited. And surprise, smoothies actually work a LOT better for my overall health. I’m drinking a litre of green smoothie every morning all summer and winter – lots of greens, water, a bit of fruit, and fresh ginger. No nuts or “superfoods”. Since I started my health has vastly improved and my digestion of other foods is overall better compared to when I was on a strict ayurvedic diet. So follow the advice the article gives about mixing your smoothies, eat a vata friendly ayurvedic diet the rest of the day and give them a fair chance! Vatas don’t have to miss out.
I have to agree with you. Too much cooked food (even prepared to my doshas) makes me feel horrible, though I’m not at all against Ayurvedic principles and do try to incorporate basic Ayurveda into my lifestyle. I’m Vata/Kapha and I feel so sick if I’m not enough salad, fruit, etc. I try to eat my salads and fruit at room temperature, etc. But eating all cooked foods just makes me feel so tired and lethargic, though I certainly eat at least 50% of my diet cooked. I think it’s all about the balance. I also think something to keep in mind is that when Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (which is also against raw fruits and veggies) were practiced, a lot of people did not have access to clean water. So eating fresh raw fruits and veggies certainly could make people with weaker constitutions sick, just from microbial contamination.
I’d like to her about the juicing as well as another who posted above. I keep the juicing simple, always include some ginger and rarely add a fruit. Sip it slowly. I do smoothies before tennis as my stomach doesn’t like exercise after a regular meal, either fruit only or greens only though I might add fresh herbs for flavor to fruit. I am always worried about my thyroid [hypo] and too much cruciferous veggies so I keep them to a minimum.
Just use your common sence. Smoothies? It is not natural at all. Too much ingredients at once. Check macrobiotics, based on yin yang. Our nutrition should be delicately balanced, because our system is delicate. It is so obvious.
I made a green smoothie once from an internet recipe and it was wrong. Not horrible but tasted wrong. Using my taste buds I reduced it to one green veg. (cucumber or tomato or zucchini, etc.) no fruit, 1/4 cup warm water, lime or ginger and a bird pepper. This tastes wonderful. I make it up at night and let it sit until noon next day. Stir and drink. Cleans me very nicely. I drink these every other day or every third day as I desire them. I eat fruit as a snack twice or three times a day. But never wreck them in a blender.
Smoothies are not inherently cold, big or heavy… same as other foods.. they can be any temp, any size with flexible ingredients.
Great article Nadia! 🙂 Love your style and writing and information! 🙂 Yay for Ayurveda!!!! xxx 🙂
You humans and your skepticism’s. too much of anything is never good for you. Humans were made to adapt, change, and evolve, not do the same thing over and over and over. Good luck with your search for good health.
With the good food crisis our nation is currently in, anything to demote or belittle good eating is taken quickly through surface headlines and not scientific evidence. Green smoothies, for some, is the only green and fruit people will eat in an entire day. I have been trying to convince my family for years to get more greens into their diet and in one article, you attempt to invalidate all the health benefits of greens and fruit blended together in a smoothie. The most interesting part is at the very bottom of the article you allude to all the ways to reduce or eliminate the 3 reasons one should avoid green smoothies. So…if you are truly interested in helping people to find health and not steer them into the opposite directions, perhaps try a different title to your article such as:
-3 ways to improve the benefits of green smoothies
Or perhaps
-How to ayurvedically balance your green smoothie.
To your health,
Sam
Your comments were greatly needed and appreciated.
Thank you,
Ron
Oh dear. I must tell you, that your premise about smoothies being what you say they are is completely based in misinformation about how green smoothies are supposed to be made! Water (never cold), bananas, fruits, and one kind of greens. That is the correct recipe. Period. The fact that people are putting stuff in there that makes it hard to digest is a good point, but you are throwing the baby out with the bathwater, and you don’t even know that the figurative bathwater they had was tainted in the first place!
Check with Victoria Boutenko, the “inventor” of the green smoothie. Her book, Green For Life is very clear that NO superfoods, oils, ice or vegetables should be mixed in! If one does use frozen fruits or greens, using a high-speed blender like a Vitamix will blend everything smooth-as-silk, and warm it up from the friction of the super-high-velocity blades. When I put frozen greens and fruit with cold water into our Vitamix, it is so powerful that it literally thaws the food as it mixes. I never have a cold green smoothie. Mine are always room temperature because the blending makes them so.
It should be water, bananas, fruit, and greens.
That’s it. Nothing else. Not ever. Or it WILL screw up digestion!
She says that greens should be categorized as their own food group, as they do not act or digest like vegetables). One can make a savory green smoothie, too, with no fruit whatsoever in it, as greens digest well with fruits OR vegetables, but one should never put both fruit AND vegetables in it. But both fruit or veg will blend and digest quite nicely with greens, provided they are never in the same smoothie together with the greens.
I think that the author makes some good points about how people ARE putting too many things in the smoothie that make digestion difficult, but the stomach turns a properly-made green smoothie out into the intestines in about 30 minutes. What you fail to realize is that you are basing your entire anti-green-smoothie premise for the article on incorrectly-made smoothies in the first place! So of COURSE people will find food-combining problems! Please read Victoria Boutenko’s book, Green For Life, and find out how they are supposed to be made, look at people who are making and drinking them correctly (leave them in the mouth til they feel warm and sweet, swishing them with your saliva for 20 seconds per mouthful, THEN swallow!
I admit that I know next to nothing about Ayruveda, therefore I will not knock it. I can tell you that the foods are appeal-free for me, and almost all Indian cuisine makes my stomach hurt. So how is that medically beneficial for me? Different races have different issues with foods, digestion and combining, too, so what works in Ayurveda, as practiced in one part of the world, will not necessarily in another.
And let’s not forget GMO’s. No one has any real clue how damaged the digestive tracts of the world are where green smoothies are being consumed. When you screw up a body with GMO’s, it may never work properly ever again. Was this taken into account in the article?
People do sometimes have low stomach acid (and actually, Tums and Rolaids have made billions selling lies to people. There is no such thing as “excess stomach acid” that needs to be “neutralized”. There is only too LITTLE stomach acid, and while these “antacids” help with symptom management temporarily, the problem they are purported to solve does not exist.) And the lack of stomach acid can make it difficult to digest them for some … but only at first!! This is due to lack of challenging the system with real food for long periods of time, followed by a real-food-smoothie. If one has eaten lots of GMO’s and processed foods, or tons of overcooked-to-the-point-of-it-being-completely-unrecognizable-mush (as much food in Ayurveda is, in my experience), then sure! A green smoothie will be a challenge to digest at first, especially if it is being made wrong. But the body is smart and will remember how to digest pure, raw, unadulterated greens and fruits that have been combined properly and blended into a *true* SMOOTHie.
Green For Life has all her research, and her results. The Green Smoothie Revolution is the follow-up book to Green for Life. They are both AMAZING books that include recipes, a study done on green smoothies (2nd book), and scientific data. She pored over hundreds of studies to find the information she did to support her claims with science. And people are recovering from injuries, many debilitating or even deadly diseases and more with these little powerhouses. Tooth pain, for example, as the author mentions, is not caused by green smoothies. They actually relieve it when raw foodists aren’t getting enough greens.
Last, the picture choice of the “smoothie” for the article is actually an under-blended “chunky”. With a Vitamix high-speed blender, one can greens as hard as Blue Scotch Curled Kale to become a smooth-as-silk creamed green!!!
Pretty please, I’m BEGGING you to read her books, then see if you don’t change your tune some. What you say about the cold, dry, etc. aspects may be true … IF combined poorly and only chewed with the teeth. But when a high-speed blender enters the picture, it’s a whole different ballgame.
I’ll read her books if you’ll read a few books on ayurvedic principles.
Hi Nadia was wondering if you can counsel clients online as I am very interested in what you do
“exploding cells…” Really?? How ridiculous. I think “everything in moderation’….Green foods with their intact enzymes and nutrients are fabulous for our health and digestion….in moderation. However many raw foods also require soaking, blanching or cooking in order to facilitate absorption of nutrients and also to remove some digestive enzyme blockers and trypsin inhibitors found in plants/legumes/nuts . Many vitamins and minerals need to conjugate with protein or amino-acid molecules in order to facilitate digestion across the intestinal wall. People suffering extreme, negative health issues subsequent to ‘green drinks’ would most likely benefit from some balance between raw and cooked food and also the consumption of non-plant proteins. (ie fish, meat, chicken etc…)
It’s quite interesting seeing an article that goes against this Green Smoothies movement. But reality is that a lot of people -like in everything- take it to the limit, FANATICS. I love green smoothies, Lemon Ginger Blast is my religion. There is a proper way of doing this, you have to research (try Lou Corona in youtube). It is true, people that promote green juices does not speak about different constitutions, I myself am mostly Earth and Water (Kapha 85%) and the rest Pitta. No Vata. And I use very simple combinations (always organically grown produce). I also complement it with my ayurvedic herbs. You have to try and see what works for you. But I wouldn’t say yo anyone DONT do green smoothies! because they are a MUST in the world we live in!
I think of Ayurveda as the best medicine system. Ayurveda treats each person as a completely unique individual, and that is why I dont like the title of this article. It sounds like global warning, too impersonal. “Green smoothies are not for everyone” or something like that would be much better.
Also at the end author says “… If you have ANY Vata in your constitution, you should avoid them alltogether.” Ayurveda explains that we ALWAYS have all three doshas, with varieties in dominance, and if any of them is missing, our body cannot survive.
Its not so much about do we drink smoothies or not, but how we combine ingredients. For some people is better to have fruits and veggies in any form, and I agree that this article may discourage many to eat healthier 🙁
I would rather have cold homemade fruit smoothie than store bought ice-cream with hormone milk, gmo corn syrup/sugar and other aditives.
Anyway, this is very interesting article. Thanks 🙂
You are correct, everyone has all three doshas in their system. Furthermore you would only avoid certain foods if you have aggravated doshas, you never eat for your “dosha” based on some platitudes of what you think your dosha is, This will royally screw you up over time though is what many people in western Ayurveda are recommending. What you focus on is daily and seasonal regimes, so in this case a fruit only smoothie far a vata consitution in the summer might be just fine actually…diets for constitution are ONLY done in cases of imbalance and are more specific than these silly food lists everyone hands out. That has little to do with Ayurveda in its proper context.
Great article! Thanks for sharing. I am predominantly vata with vata imbalances and was wondering why some concoctions were making me bloat. I mainly eat soups & warm bean dishes, but also quite a bit of raw food desserts such as raw cheesecake, raw carrot cake & energy balls to cut down sugar etc. These desserts are filled with grinded nuts, coconut oil & dates. Will this also have a negative effect in a similar way? I would love for you to do an article on this, thanks
Ayurveda recommends very few raw foods. There are some trends nowadays where people are mixing the two but this is not Ayurveda, it is cashing in on a trend. Try sticking to cooked foods. Also even if people are more “vata” predominant in their constitution often times their bodies and digestion can’t handle some of the heavier foods often given to them to “calm” their vata and can make things worse. Best bet is to find a REAL Ayruvedic physician with real training and clinical background before you go messing around with your diet off some little blog post. This stuff is not as simple as people make it out to be.
Bryan,
I agree with your posts and especially your last comment about finding a real Ayruvedic physician.
Agree also that this stuff is not simple
I have never liked green smoothies because they seemed hard on my digestion. Your explanation, however, seems too general when taking into consideration all the different body compositions. I do juice veggies almost every day with ginger. I love my juice and my digestion is amazing.
I think it also depends on where you live. Here in Florida I’m longing for cold foods. I don’t mix vegetables and fruit. I have a fruit smoothy in the morning and later on a vegetable smoothy and a ‘normal’ meal at night. I don’t eat meat, diary products or grains. I use very ripe bananas too and indeed also add avocado and coconut, ginger and even some pepper when I feel a little cold. In the long run my hair and nails have become thicker. I am a Kapha/Pita dosha. It comes down to LISTENING to your body and you’ll find out what your body needs. I think that smoothy’s are VERY GOOD when it takes people away from their morning cereals and muffins and pancakes. Thank you very much!
I was curious why you said people’s digestion can handle smoothies better in the summer months. Our digestion as well as bodily strength is at its lowest then and vata is aggravated, pitta is not. While fruits are definitely recommended in the summer, smoothies are just a bad idea round the board for a lot of the reasons you mentioned.
It said that some people may be better at handling it…
Yes some, but was particularly referencing summer for a reason which seemed to imply since it is “pitta” time according to western modernized Ayurveda digestion would be stronger to handle these things. This is incorrect as digestion is low and pitta is only accumulating during the summer, This was the point I was making. Plus you can’t understand a persons digestive capacities based on their constitution alone. To just say a pitta or pitta-kapha person can handle something is misrepresenting how Ayurveda might actually handle this scenario. What if the pitta person’s water element is low? Digestion isn’t going to happen so well. This stuff is more complex then VPK. Understanding an individuals agni and constitution are not one and the same. This western Ayurveda trend likes to oversimplify things a little too much. Further more people with more predominance of kapha may tend to have lower agni which makes this even more questionable. If you guys want to learn some of these details I’d check out http://www.darshanproject.org before you go changing your diet, lots of misinformation out there….Hope this helps someone.
I am so skeptical of all this ayurvedic mysticism. Please explain in scientific terms why and how,
“but the bad news is all of your other tissues do too including the deeper tissues of bone, marrow, nerve and sexual reproductive tissue [get broken down] . . . we’re talking weaker teeth, weaker bones, compromised nerve conduction and communication, hormone issues and infertility”
Why would eating tons of calcium rich kale, greens, spirulina, and wheatgrass have anything to do with breaking down tissues and even bones! Really? Maca is actually an aphrodisiac and does the opposite of making you infertile.
It’s great to look to thousand year old myths to organize your life around but please don’t try and say what you are saying without a single scientific source, reference material or mention and expect it to become widely followed. I would be far less skeptical if you had some science to back this up.
Eating greens does NOT break down tissues and even bones. It just isn’t true. What an incredible disservice to those who are trying to eat healthfully in a culture that is bombarded with empty, harmful food. To put greens and super foods in this category is just ridiculous and is just plain missing the forest for the trees. Yes, let’s see the science.
You have to understand that greens and the like are very light. They don’t build the body in the way that other foods do. I have seen time and time again that people eating diets high in raw vegetables and the like, cleansing all the time, etc. start to have issues with bone density, nervous disorders, osteoporosis, etc…You don’t understand the paradigm these statements are working out of. It is not WESTERN medicine which doesn’t have a clue on what to eat and why either.Remember not long ago red meat and smoking was all good? Or shoving your body full of multivitamins? Come one people wake up!
Red meat still is not bad. TOO MUCH is not good.
TOO MUCH of only one thing is not good.
Only drink this smoothies you will have nutrients you body needs but does not get.
Tisues in our bodies are constantely replaced. Our body needs certain well let’s call it building blocks to do so. For your bones you will need to take in Calcium, in a way your body can use it by the way (no need to eat crayons for example). (my native language is not english and sometimes I have to get around words I do not know)
TOO much vitames also could harm. But you will need to take in a LOT. Some vitames your body simply will not take in and well you see the picture. Other vitames it will storage and that can lead to problems. But I guess this is not possible when eating normal foods (how ever the story about the dog liver and too high vitame A tells us different)
Well in short our bodies need buildingblocks.
And enough energy.
If you starve yourself let’s say on 500 calories your body will get the extra out of other tissues. But the bone thing more has to do with not enough buildingblocks to repair and renew.
So I guess one could take a smoothie for breakfast or lunch … but not the whole day and only smoothies like this for a long long while. You will then see your body lacks buildingblocks of some kind.
Ayurveda,Yoga, and all these eastern disciplines work in their own energetic paradigm. Ayurveda particularly is a science of qualities and not quantities like western medical science even though there are some studies in India if you look around but is kind of missing the point. You have to understand this. Look at all the “research” done by western medical nutrition over the past 60 years. It’s overturned every 5-10 years! They have no clue. Ayurveda when PROPERLY practiced is very deep. In fact western surgery and the entire western medical tradition that started with Hippocrates likely grew out of it. There is a logic in place and if you study it a little you will see it’s not all myth and fancy, but that would require actually reading something more than a blog. However a lot of people have been sold a dumbed down version of it in the west and are practicing it incorrectly, though even a lot of Indian institutions and “vaidyas” are corrupt as well to be honest. It’s a complex topic, but your response here is overly simple.
It is difficult to provide Western scientific sources to back up an article that is purely based on the Ayurvedic perspective, and also one that is just narrowly about Green Smoothies. Nutrition science is only 170 years old so hasn’t yet had time to study all of the ideas presented by ancient medical systems… plus, who would fund the science for such studies? What is written in this article is backed up by year of clinic experience – seeing hundreds of ex-raw foodists or smoothie devotees who are suffering the consequences of carrying out such activities long term.
But, here is some research based on raw food diets that you may find interesting:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9831783
This study is about raw foodist and increased dental eroision
In a ‘Harvard Thinks Big 2010’ talk I watched recently, it cited a study (The Giessen Raw Food Study) of female German raw foodists who had been eating raw food diets of a very high quality for 3-5 years (and they weren’t vegan, so ate meat as well). Over 50% of them had developed amenorrhea (which means they stopped menstruating so were no longer able to have children) and Here is the link:
This video is of Harvard Professor Richard Wrangham – if you’d like to read a very comprehensive science about raw food and its depelting effect on the body vs cooked food I highly recommend reading “Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human”.
Here is another link that may be of interest: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7JuMTlZVvM&NR=1
In this Horizon documentary it points out that raw food takes about 80% more energy to digest than cooked food.
I hope that helps back things up at little…..
Cheers

Hi Nadia,
First off, i trust you meant well with your post.
You say if you are Vata and live liters of smoothies made from as many ingredients as possible, you’ll aggravate Vata and break down tissue longterm.
Define “longterm”?
What if you consume balancing foods in all other meals?
Why are a myriad of spices ok but a few fruits with leafy greens, or also “superfoods”, not?
Why do you write if you are kapha or pitta you will be handling smoothies better than MOST – since when are most people Vata?
If veggies sit together in a pot for eg a curry, they “get to know each other” you say, so what if you store your smoothie ingredients all in one basket?
Regarding dental erosion – were those teeth perfectly fine before? Did the respective people rinse their mouth after eating? Otherwise it can simply be the acidity of fruit affecting the enamel.
Regarding the amount of ingredients, sone do contain a fair amount though most recipes are actually made of one leafy green and one or two kinds of fruit; veggies are rather unusual to be found in a smoothie.
Finally, the title of your post is quite misleading, what about changing it to eg ” 3 things to consider with green smoothies” or “possible side effects of green smoothies”?
Have a great day,
Lisa
But Dr. Arnold Ehret said in his book that when woman are on a rawfood diet, they stop menstruating because they are so clean inside, that they do not have to menstruate. I have only read that in his book. Don’t know if that is the truth.
I was just talking with a student who takes my YogAlign class about why green smoothies are hard on the digestion. The amount of greens, fruits, nuts and supplements that people take in through drinking has always seemed unhealthy to me. People have offered me those green drinks but they never tasted good to me and my stomach immediately felt sour. Now after reading this, I have more information on why it disturbs the agni or digestive fires. I had no idea that the bones and teeth could weaken from cells breaking down and affecting the ojas. I would appreciate more information on the science behind this aspect of it. How exactly does the energetic feeling from green drinks created by cells exploding lead to tissue breakdown?
Think about it this way. If one takes in enough food/nutrients why would the body break down other cells??? It would have no need to do so for energy.
This is a very well written article that I feel speaks very clearly to a select population that will alternatively still choose healthier food. Not a good one for many, sadly, who might be just starting to delve into a healthier eating lifestyle and would be discouraged by it… Certainly not your responsibility, and i absolutely respect your information, but I just shuddered at the headline because the health food movement in this country is waging such an uphill battle as it is against Big Ag, GMO, and a very pervasive wrong-thinking mentality when it comes to our food supply in the US. Sorry, such is the good the bad and the ugly of our soundbite obsessed social media society. Just some food for thought (pun intended!), thank you for the interesting information!!
I have that concern as well, Eric. I fear that people will use this article as an excuse to give up healthier eating.
People who need an excuse to give up healthy eating have a whole other issue to deal with. Green smoothies are not the cure. And yes, they’re very heavy and unhealthy when loaded with ingredients. “Keep it simple” is one of the author’s points and it’s valid vis a vis Ayurveda. If you don’t follow an Ayurvedic lifestyle then this article can be ignored but there’s no need to be dismissive about the information here.
The article is excellent because it does not stop you, but asks you to moderate intake. I grew up in an Ayurvedic home. First I experienced the practice of this science before I learned the facts behind the practices. Ayurveda, like the dynamic body is adoptive and dynamic by nature. We have to be self aware of the state of our body; doshas are not static and the body’s needs shift with activity, sleep, stress etc.. Kaphas or Pittas states can act like Agnis by not just a change in the state of body but the state of mind.
The human body is the most magnificent machine ever conceived and built. What does this mean for food? The body processes everything and disposes what it does not need. Even the complex and toxic foods are processed. We can see this everyday in the billions of people who consume foods, unaware of nutrition.
So how this relates to the green smoothies? Consume all foods, including green smoothies in small quantities. Eat in proportion to your body’s needs. Pace your foods to let the body extract nutrition and dispose off the wastes, before putting more in the pipeline.
Thanks Nadia, for this beautiful article.
The title doesn’t say “moderate” it says “avoid green smoothies”! I would love it if the author would change the title!
Agreed! Moderation not complete avoidance!
I would like to add one more reason to not overdo smoothies (or juicing) is the lack of chewing, which is part of the digestive system. Instead, I try to serve lettuce or leafy vegetable at least once a day as a side dish and on top of other vegetable.
Great Article & I agree with you whole-heartedly! It’s hard to know what is ‘healthy’ these days with so much marketing, and particularly, so much conflicting information. I also think cold foods are much harder on us than we realize. I’m glad, though, that you included the disclaimer about ‘robust Pitta’ being more equipped to digest smoothies better. It’s important that all nutrition teachers express the importance of ‘individuality’ with food, and help others learn when to eat certain things–and why.
I think green drinks make people feel amazing, initially, because they are ingesting a lot more nutrients that the Standard Western Diet, though I see a lot of clients who get rigid about it and don’t recognize that after a certain amount of time, they can hurt the digestive system, and eventually, the bones & teeth. Check out my post on 10 items that make you ‘cold’ and ultimately damage the digestion: http://bit.ly/1g9Uhy6
Good information and very usefull
I think there is validity here… I combine raw and cooked vegetarian foods, and I think that the ayurvedic idea that the digestive system likes simplicity is backed up by science and other traditions too… Lets not forget that the idea of drinking chlorophyll extracts from herbs or grasses such as wheatgrass was originally intended to be done first thing in the morning, without any other kinds of foods, and has much scientific validity to it that way in detoxing the system, supplying haem to the blood and magnesium and antioxidants… the idea of combining chlorophyll bearing leaves with superfoods and fruits (which I also use, but not incorrectly combined with greens) is more of a hippie-fashion improv-assumption, thinking that combining things which are beneficial separately can benefit when combined: not so! The digestive system obeys the rules of food combining. Great piece.
very interested by your point of view on ayurveda in the 21th century thanx for sharing
I totally disagree with you on many levels sorry. I have only been doing smoothies for 4 weeks and already my dry (straw hair) no longer needs conditioner to make it feel soft and smooth. My energy levels have increased, my moods swings stabilized, and my breath improved and many more. I am probably making them different to what you are perhaps saying, but for me they have totally changed many aspects of my live.
So you may be right in what you say but it must come down to how you make them and what you put in them. To make a blanket statement to say why they should be avoided I personally think is inaccurate. Sorry.
Vicki, you are missing the point. as Nadia mentioned in this wonderful article, when you first start (as you have, just 4 weeks ago) you will notice all kinds of health benefits (as you have) but if you have a vata dosha and you continue with daily smoothies you will eventually exaggerate the vata in your constitution and come out of balance.
As a former raw foodest who loved green smoothies, I will COMPLETELY agree with the article, and with yourself, Pace. After doing a lot of green smoothies, my energy and dosha were COMPLETELY out of whack. I’ve had to transition entirely from that lifestyle, just to bring things back into balance.
The energy at first is fun… but then the cold sets in….
This is a better version of a ‘green smoothie/kale shake’ 🙂 http://www.bulletproofexec.com/the-kale-shake-is-awesome-so-upgrade-it/
I was taken off of (mainly) raw food and smoothies by my ayurveda/orthomolecular dietist, because I’m mainly Vata and recovering from a burn-out.
I got back to a more healthy weight (I had dropped so much my doctor started asking questions) and got my period back in 3 weeks after I had skipped twice since going raw…
I had been wondering why I was feeling more listless and aching for pumpkin and ginger soup lately while in the beginning I was really enjoying the raw food experience. This explains it all…
Former high raw food eater, dominant vata here. Felt great for the first 30 days of raw. Then not so great so added some cooked. But had raw green smoothies every morning year round for over 5 years ( nuts fruit, greens) while living in a cold climate and leading a very active lifestyle. Surprisingly diagnosed at age 50 w osteoporosis despite all the activity and weight bearing. Then out of nowhere started bleeding internally. Have been dealing w upper GI bleeds now for 2.5 yrs. No one has a clue as to why. I thought Ayurveda principles didn’t apply to me although I was very familiar w them. Now I am convinced those smoothies set me up for the bleeding. Maybe moderation would have been OK, like having hot breakfast in winter or just doing it for 30 days as a cleanse. I also think the chewing issue might have contributed. Now even a smoothie with just one ingredient causes stomach pain so I have given them up completely. I hope this article helps to save someone the distress, money and hospitalizations and endoscopies that I have experienced. Thank you for putting it out there.
I agree to! People over fill there smoothies. I actually didn’t like how I felt drinking them. However, simple green drinks can aid you. How much consumption is the issue here. Now someone who eats fast food 3 times a day will benifit from a full green smoothie diet. I still would prefer drinking my lunch over eating it. I don’t take in as much calories.
I have been using Green Juices and smoothies for over a year and all the health benefits have gotten stronger. This “article” is just a trashy sales piece and is just as bad for American society as an advertisement for a Diet Soda. Raw vegetables, hard to digest? Hysterical Idiocy.
It always comes back to bio-individuality. There are so many things that influence our individual digestive systems (hormones, stress and emotions being among the more intangible things) – it’s impossible to say anything will ever work across the board. I think she did a great job of clarifying how certain bodies may do well with certain things and others may not.
Yes, raw veggies, the ones listed that are dense and tough like Kale, & Collard and some cabbages, are hard to digest. Maybe if you are 20, and not yet knowledgeably or affected by world diet or eating whatever you please, you won’t notice, but as your body ages and the digestive system wears down, you start watching these things. I had an intuition that putting Kale or collard in the blender instead of keeping the drink made of lighter, gentler chard and lettuces, is not OK, as I bloat and get discomfort. This article explains why. Just make those daily greendrinks less loaded is wise compromise. And, we are all different.
This is indeed a relevant and informative article, perhaps not for you and that’s ok. If you have nothing useful to add, refrain from being rude, please. It’s only highlighting your unsavoury side. No one is stopping you from eating and drinking whatever you want.
It seems that you’re the one being hysterical. Besides you may be not a “dominant vata” person, so some of the warnings given here may not apply to you. Still it doesn’t mean the article is wrong.
That’s right. It’s definitely for some people so if not for you don’t knock it. I’ve digestive issues for some time now and thought smoothies would help and my stomach swells up like a balloon and I have friends who swear by them. We’re all different and have different problems and that’s ok. If they work for you do it and if not don’t. Listen to your body
How can it be a trashy sales piece when they are not trying to sell anything. Think before you respond. Also, what works for one might not work for another. You cant tell someone what they are feeling and experiencing is wrong because you are not them. Think before you respond.
👍

I have been drinking green smoothies for 6 years and have none of the health complaints the article talks about; and my hair has become luxurious. The article is mis-leading. Greens are good for us, keep eating them.
I agree with you, Vicki, and I’ve been eating them, as much as I feel like it, for more than twelve years, along with a 95+% raw vegan diet. And I am Vata. And yes, one can get unbalanced on diet like this (but then again not just green smoothies are the culprit), but one can learn how to stay grounded in various ways, including altering diet when necessary. I find 1) to have some validity, 2) is LUDICROUS, and 3) is pretty ridiculous as well…if its too much fiber adjust the quantity or eat more slowly. Or take breaks from green smoothies too (there are many types and ways to combine, them, I favor the low fat with fruit version usually, or for dinner a high fat zero sugar approach). But to make a hit-piece on them like this is postively HARMFUL though I expect the author has good intentions.
Stephen, with all due respect, your comment shows that you have no idea which foods are ideal for vatas, and which ones are not.
You are right, this is very inaccurate, it’s not based on self experience or science but a lot of blind following of whatever is stated by the “teachers” who a lot of time are themselves unhealthy but everything they say is blindly followed in a cult like manner. Ayurvedic practitioners please ask honestly yourselves if this is you, are you just following the ayurvedic herd or do you actually have experience with this? I know all of you have the best of intentions so please make sure you are learning the right things, blessings on your journeys.
Hi Wangchen
If anyone calls themselves an Ayurvedic practioner it should mean they have studied Ayurveda! IF they have they would know that Ayurveda is based on minimum 5000 years of science. Meaning that the basic principals that underpin Ayurveda, such as ‘ digestive fire and Vata, Pitta And Kapha ect have been proved over and over agai to be true, ok? So I invite you to read up a little on these principals for yourself and try them, see if they are true for you! After all, isn’t that whats going to have meaning for you? And yes I’m an ayurvedic practioner and always make sure that whatever I tell my clients I have first hand knowledge that it’s true! Go for it!
I agree–it seems to be an article not about green smoothies but about improper food combining, temperature of food and particular dosha needs. I find it very interesting when any article talks about how Greens are actuallly bad for you, or not as good as we think. Totally disagree
I am curious; you refer to smoothies – does the same thought process apply to juicing?
Great piece Nadia! I’ll be sharing it. As an Ayurvedic practitioner I completely agree with everything you said 🙂 Green juicing, and and juicing in general may be good, even great, for SOME people, SOME of the time. but certainly not for everyone all year-round! A friend who attended one of my workshops recently, where I spoke about the “raw food/juicing” craze had a Ahah! moment and realized the daily green juice she was having were actually making her feel bloated and gassy (she is vata with vata imbalances to begin with!). All the best, Sylvie Barthelemy.
I agree totally….
I tried it and I came to the same conclusions as you….
Nice to share….
If find this article a bit hypocritical. You say the proponents of colonic therapy offer no scientific evidence or studies as proof of efficacy. Yet you offer none for your own theory. The references at the bottom of the article are far from scientific.
I know, right? The references made me laugh…
LornaJane?? (movenourishbelieve) it’s simply a smoothie recipe- how does that count as a reference?
The one scientific abstract was regarding dental erosion on people who are a raw foods diet.
1) Dental erosion’s not the topic. 2) Not all those who drink green smoothies are even following a raw food diet. I sure am not.
If people on the comments show ayurveda has scientific basis and not simply ‘folklore’, why doesn’t any provide links to such scientific evidence.
Health and Blessings.
Yepp a lot of selfmade healers proposales (((
This original piece is very narrow minded. If you actually do your research and not juice any old crap you can get a well balanced intake. I think the piece sees everyone, most people, as jumping on the band wagon without thought, this is untrue
