3 Easy Ways To Beat Holiday Bloating

Ah, the holidays are here! Yay, this means yummy food and lovely get togethers with people we haven’t seen for a while! It means sharing presents and sharing love. And it also means potential holiday bloating.

Holiday bloating is often caused by continual eating without a gap for digestion. This disturbs the digestive fire which, after prolonged eating, no longer knows when to start or stop. Digestion then becomes irregular and a build up of air or backed up vata dosha accumulates in the belly. As a result of that, the kapha nature is instigated. You either want to fall asleep or eat even more in an attempt to find balance and a state of ease.

Here’s three of my favorite ways to handle holiday bloating, so your digestion can happen with ease.

1. Go for a Stroll After You Eat

Exercise is very important at this time of year so take time to go for a nice invigorating walk after supper.  It doesn’t need to be a long walk. Fifteen or twenty minutes will go a long way to help you feel lighter, burn calories and inspire your digestive system to stay active.

2. Polish the Diamond

The yogasana – Vajrasana – the diamond pose is one of my absolute favorite ways to combat bloating, indigestion and constipation.  Sitting in this pose for ten to fifteen minutes after a meal does wonders for digestion. It is also great for stretching, strengthening and improving the flexibility of the hip, knees and ankle joints!

3.  Spice it Up

3 Easy Ways To Beat Holiday BloatingThere are many very helpful ways to use spices to aid in easing bloating, indigestion and low energy.  Below is a little recipe I keep on hand that can be added to boiling water to make chai, sprinkled on your morning oatmeal or munched on after meals.

4 cloves
1 stick of cinnamon
1 tsp of fennel seed
4 cardamon pods
1/4 tsp of dry ginger

Grind the ingredients together and keep the powder in a glass jar.  You can double or triple this recipe to keep more on hand but it truly is better the fresher it is.

I have been in the healing arts for the past 20 years. I started learning yoga at the age of 12 and was fascinated with our body, our mind and our aura! I went to India at the age of 22 and studied yoga, classical dance and Ayurveda. My bliss is helping people find harmony in all areas of life so they can strive to fulfill their higher mission on this planet!

I cannot do this pose due to an artificial knee – (and also I am heavy) if I sit close to this using a chair, pulling my legs as up and back as far I can, will that help?
